Until the introduction of the 2010MY Legacy and Outback models, Remote Engine Start (RES) programming was sometimes "tedious". If a step was left out, a technician could spend quite a bit of time trying to get the system to work. Following the steps below should help streamline the process.
You must first program the Tachometer Idle Speed as outlined in the installation instructions. Confirm the engine has maintained 750-1000 rpm.
Next, program the RES fobs. Page 54 of the Technician Reference Booklet for the #602 Course Module (Electrical Systems Operation and Diagnosis ) has an excellent outline of this procedure. It can be found on STIS by clicking on the Reference Publications tab, then select "Training Materials" > "Tech Reference Booklets" > then enter "602" in the "Text (Optional)" box, and click on "Search".
The final step is Immobilizer Interface Programming (the programming of the fobs to the BIU). A flow chart for this is included in the installation instructions. Make sure you have all of the Customer's keys, the security ID code, and correct teaching code for key registration. When utilizing the stand-alone feature of the SDI box, remember that our vehicles do not feature a Smart Key Start system, so select "NO" or "otherwise" when prompted. Finally, make sure that you press the remote start momentary programming button during 4th key registration (applicable to Impreza, Forester, Tribeca and 2005-2009MY Legacy/Outback models).
For 2010MY Legacy and Outback models, you will press the 'C' button on the SDI box when you are prompted to register the 4th key instead of pressing the momentary button. This will display the prompt that reads "Register Remote Eng. Starter?" Press the Enter button and the RES system will register. When completed, you will be prompted to IG OFF and remove the key, then check engine start. Press ENT to exit out of the registration procedure properly.
