Valve Clearance: 3.0L

  1. Set the vehicle on the lift.
  2. Disconnect battery ground cable. See Figure .
  3. Lift up the vehicle.
  4. Remove under cover. See Fig 1 .
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Place suitable container under the vehicle.
  7. When inspecting right cylinder: Remove air intake duct and air cleaner case. Remove V-belt. Remove power steering hose from bracket. See Fig 2 . Remove bolts which install power steering pump bracket. See Fig 3 . Remove power steering tank from the bracket by pulling it upward. See Fig 4 . Place power steering pump on right side wheel apron. See Fig 5 . Remove right fuel pipe protector. See Fig 6 . Disconnect fuel injector connectors. See Fig 7 . Disconnect front oxygen (A/F) sensor connector. See Fig 8 . Disconnect oil pressure switch connector (A), (B) is oil filter. See Fig 9 . Remove ignition coils. Remove right rocker cover.
  8. When inspecting left side cylinder: Set the vehicle on the lift. Remove battery. Remove washer tank mounting bolts. See Fig 10 . Disconnect washer motor connectors. See Fig 11 . Move washer tank upward and secure out of the way. See Figure . Disconnect PCV and blow-by hoses from left rocker cover. See Fig 12 . Remove left fuel pipe protector. See Fig 13 . Disconnect fuel injector connectors (A). See Fig 14 . Disconnect front oxygen (A/F) sensor connector (B). Remove ignition coils. Remove left rocker cover.
  9. Using special service tool 18252AA000 crankshaft socket, turn the crankshaft clockwise. Adjust the camshaft position so that the cam lobe is perpendicular to the shim as shown. See Fig 15 .
    10. CAUTION: Insert the thickness gauge in as horizontal a direction as possible with respect to the shim.
    NOTE: If the measured value is not within specification, take notes of the value in order to adjust the valve clearance later on. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION (3.0L)  table.
  10. Measure intake valve and exhaust valve clearances by using thickness gauge (A). See Fig 16 .
  11. If necessary, adjust the valve clearance. See 3.0L  under VALVE ADJUSTMENT.
  12. Further turn crankshaft pulley clockwise. Using the same procedure described previously, then measure valve clearances again.
  13. After inspection, install the related parts in the reverse order of removal.
