Steering Angle Sensor: Replacement
CAUTION:
If the steering wheel and steering angle sensor are removed, perform the 0 point setting for each sensor. < Refer to
ADJUSTMENT , VDC Control Module and Hydraulic Control Unit (VDCCM&H/U). >
- Position the front wheels straight ahead. (After moving a vehicle 5 m (16 ft) or more with front wheels positioned straight ahead, make sure that the vehicle moves straight ahead.)
- Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect the ground cable from battery and wait for at least 60 seconds before starting work.CAUTION: Always < Refer to CAUTION , General Description. >
- Remove the driver's airbag module assembly.
- Using a hexagon wrench etc. wrapped by protective tape, insert the snap pins and release the locks (3 locations).
- Disconnect the horn harness and airbag connector and remove the airbag module assembly. < Refer to DRIVER' AIRBAG MODULE, CURTAIN AIRBAG MODULE, PRETENSIONER & LAP SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER , PROCEDURE, Airbag Connector. >
- Remove the steering wheel.CAUTION:
- Always use the steering wheel puller for removal to avoid deforming the steering wheel.
- If the steering wheel has been removed, make sure that the roll connector is not turned from the original position.
- Disconnect the connector and remove the nut.
- Put alignment marks and remove the steering wheel.
Preparation tool:
Steering wheel puller
- Remove the steering column cover.
- Lower the lever of the steering column.
- Release the claws and remove the screws, then detach the steering column lower cover.
- Separate the steering column upper cover and steering upper cover, and remove the steering column upper cover.
- Remove the roll connector.CAUTION: Make sure that the roll connector is not turned from the original position.
- Disconnect the connector under the roll connector.
- Release the claws and remove the roll connector.
- Remove the steering angle sensor.
- Release the claws and remove the steering angle sensor (b) from the roll connector (a).
- Install the steering angle sensor.
- Apply grease to the protrusion (a) of the new steering angle sensor.CAUTION: Do not rotate the steering angle sensor protrusion.
- Align the center of roll connector. < Refer to INSTALLATION , Roll Connector. >
- Align the position of the protrusion and install roll connector to steering angle sensor.
- Apply grease to the protrusion (a) of the new steering angle sensor.
- Install each part in the reverse order of removal.
Tightening torque:
Steering wheel: 39 N.m (3.98 kgf-m, 28.8 ft-lb)
Clearance:
Between column cover and steering wheel: 4 - 6 mm (0.16 - 0.24 in)
- After installation, perform the neutral position setting of the steering angle sensor. < Refer to SET UP MODE FOR NEUTRAL OF STEERING ANGLE SENSOR & LATERAL G SENSOR 0 POINT , ADJUSTMENT, VDC Control Module and Hydraulic Control Unit (VDCCM&H/U). >
