Automatic Transmission Assembly: Removal
- Open the front hood and support with the hood stay.
- Disconnect the ground cable from battery.
- Remove the collector cover.
- Remove the air intake chamber and intake boot. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Air Intake Chamber. >
- Remove the air breather hose. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Air Breather Hose. >
- Remove the starter. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Starter. >
- Disconnect the front oxygen (A/F) sensor, rear oxygen sensor and transmission harness connector.
- Disconnect the engine harness connectors, and then remove the engine hanger rear.
- Remove the vacuum pipe & hose assembly and the brake vacuum pump. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Brake Vacuum Pump. >
- Remove the throttle body securing bolts to and slide the throttle body over.
- Separate the torque converter from drive plate.
- Remove the service hole plug.
- Remove the bolts which hold torque converter to drive plate.
- Remove the four bolts by rotating the crank pulley a little at a time.
- Make sure the torque converter moves freely by rotating with finger through the starter installation hole.CAUTION: Be careful not to drop bolts into the converter housing.
- Attach the ST to the converter case.

- Remove the pitching stopper.
- Remove the pitching stopper bracket.
- Set the ST.

- Remove the transmission mounting bolt (upper side).
- Lift up the vehicle.
- Remove the under cover.
- Remove the front exhaust pipe, rear exhaust pipe and muffler. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Front Exhaust Pipe. > < Ref. to REMOVAL , Rear Exhaust Pipe. > < Ref. to REMOVAL , Muffler. >
- Remove the heat shield cover.
- Remove the ATF drain plug to drain ATF. < Ref. to REPLACEMENT , Automatic Transmission Fluid. >
- Remove the oil charge pipe.
- Disconnect the connector from turbine speed sensor 1.
- Remove the turbine speed sensor 1 from the transmission body.CAUTION: Failure to follow this procedure may cause the interference between vehicle body and sensor while removing/installing transmission, and resulting in damage.
- To prevent contamination by foreign objects, cover the attachment hole for turbine speed sensor 1 with vinyl tape.
- Remove the propeller shaft. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Propeller Shaft. >
- Remove the shift select cable. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Select Cable. >
- Disconnect the ATF AT inlet and outlet hoses from the ATF AT inlet and outlet pipes.
- Remove the front crossmember support plate. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Front Crossmember Support Plate. >
- Remove the front stabilizer clamp. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Front Stabilizer. >
- Remove the bolts which secure front ball joint to the housing. < Ref. to REMOVAL , Front Ball Joint. >
- Pull out the drive shaft from transmission.
- Set the transmission jack under the transmission.
- Remove the rear crossmember from the vehicle.
- Remove the transmission mounting bolt and nut (lower side).
- Remove the transmission.NOTE:
- Turn the engine support assembly from the vehicle under body to the left (to shorten the engine support length), and lower the rear of the engine for easy disassembly.
- Be careful not to allow breather pipe and etc. to touch the vehicle body when detaching the automatic transmission assembly by pulling it backward.
- Remove the rear cushion rubber from the transmission.
