Drive Pinion: Assembly

  1. Install the plug to the drive pinion retainer with a new O-ring.
    CAUTION:
    • Before installing O-rings, apply sufficient amount of CVTF to avoid damage and deformation.
    • Use SUBARU genuine CVTF.
    • Be careful not to incorrectly install or fail to install O-rings and other such parts.

    Tightening torque:

    25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.4 ft-lb)

  2. Using the ST, install the oil seal to drive pinion retainer.
    CAUTION:
    • Apply CVTF to the press-fitting surface of oil seal and apply differential gear oil to the lip portion.
    • Use SUBARU genuine CVTF.

  5. Using a press, press-fit a new taper roller bearing inner race (rear side) together with a new taper roller bearing outer race.
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the taper roller bearing by applying excessive force.
NOTE: Press in to a position where the taper roller bearing rotates smoothly without play.

  6. Install a new O-ring to the drive pinion.
    CAUTION:
    • Before installing O-rings, apply sufficient amount of differential gear oil to avoid damage and deformation.
    • Be careful not to incorrectly install or fail to install O-rings and other such parts.
  7. Install the drive pinion collar.
  8. Tighten a new lock nut using ST1 and ST2.
NOTE: Tighten the lock nut with ST1 and torque wrench aligned straight.

    Preparation tool:

    ST1: ADAPTER WRENCH (18621AA000)

    ST2: HOLDER (18667AA010)

    Tightening torque:

    Calculation formula
    T = 116 N.m (11.8 kgf-m, 85.6 ft-lb) x L/(100 mm (3.94 in) + L)
    T: Tightening torque
L: Effective length of torque wrench
NOTE: If the effective length of the torque wrench used is unknown, consult the manufacturer of the torque wrench.

    1. Effective length of the ST
    2. Effective length of the torque wrench
    3. Center of drive square of the ST
    4. Center of drive square of the torque wrench
    5. Center of the position where a force is applied by hand

  9. Apply differential gear oil to the roller part of taper roller bearing, and rotate it several times.
  10. Measure the starting torque of the taper roller bearing, and make sure that the starting torque is within the specified range. If the torque is not within specified range, replace the taper roller bearing.

    Starting torque:

    14.3 - 46.4 N (1.5 - 4.7 kgf, 3.2 - 10.4 lbf)

  11. Crimp the lock nut in 2 locations.
  12. Using the ST, measure drive pinion dimension "B".

    Preparation tool:

    ST: GAUGE (398643600)

  13. Obtain the thickness "T" mm (in) of the drive pinion shim using the following formula.

    T = 6.55±0.1225 - (B - A)

    [T in = 0.258±0.0048 - (B - A)]

    T: Shim thickness

A: Height from ST to bearing catch saucer of drive pinion

B: Height from ST to case side end face of drive pinion retainer

  14. Select three drive pinion shims or less so that the total thickness of the drive pinion shims meets the value obtained from step 13.
  15. Install the drive pinion shims selected for drive pinion retainer and drive pinion.
CAUTION: Be careful not to bend the drive pinion shim.

    Tightening torque:

    70 N.m (7.1 kgf-m, 51.6 ft-lb)
