07 REPLACING B-TYPE BIU
The Techline has been receiving calls from Technicians replacing BIUs where the keys cannot be successfully registered. Keep in mind on a B-type system, the BIU and combination meter store key IDs when programmed. These key IDs remain stored and must match when installing a new component to the immobilizer. If the car came with three keys, then the BIU and combination meter will have three key IDs stored. When replacing a BIU, you should collect all the keys from the customer. However, if you did not do that and are looking to program the BIU, you will need to delete the keys from the immobilizer before installing the new BIU. When you program the new BIU you will only need the one key from the ignition which was not deleted, program that key, then when all the original keys are obtained, you can program them. This could also be used if the customer has lost a key and does not want to replace it but wants to repair the car. However, if you run into a scenario where you cannot communicate with the BIU to delete the keys, then you will need to get the original keys that were programmed to the vehicle to successfully finish the programming.
Example 1: A 2015 Legacy comes in and has BIU failure. You cannot communicate with the BIU; the customer has supplied three original keys. Replace the BIU and program the keys.
Example 2: A 2015 Outback comes in and has been diagnosed with a BIU issue. Communication is normal. The customer only has one key for the car all others were lost. Go into immobilizer and delete all keys. This will delete all except the one in the ignition. Next, install the new BIU and program the only one key you have. Extra keys can be added upon the customer's request.
Example 3: A 2015 Forester comes in and has been diagnosed as having a faulty BIU. Communication is normal. The customer has supplied all original keys to the Technician. Replace the BIU and program the keys. When replacing a BIU always follow the applicable Service Manual procedure.
Information below can be found in the Immobilizer Registration Manual. Navigate to STIS-online reference-publication type-other/miscellaneous-search.
01 HINTS FOR SEARCHING ACCESORY INSTALLATION DIRECTIONS WITH ONLINE REFERENCE
Many Technicians call Techline because they are having difficulty locating certain publications required for effective diagnosis. Most of these problems occur from Technicians having trouble searching the Online Reference section of STIS. Here are some useful hints to improve the efficacy of the Online Reference search.
Finding the correct Accessory Installation Guide may consume too much time for some as they are only published in the first model year of the body style for the vehicle. Instead of searching every year or trying to remember which model year the vehicle was introduced, the fastest way to find the required installation guide is to check the Accessory Installation Guide box and enter the part number from the accessory package in the keyword search field.
For further hints on searching Online Reference, please see the Techtip from 1/20 here.
03 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE INSTALLATION & DAMAGE
Techline has been receiving calls with reports of stalling, DTC P0336, and strange AVCS operation after servicing the vehicle. There have also been reports of a no start condition due to installing the crank plate on backwards, with the teeth aimed away from the Crankshaft Position Sensor. The root cause has been traced to a damaged or incorrectly installed crankshaft sensor plate. When removing and installing the crankshaft sensor plate pay close attention to the locating dowel on the back of the crankshaft. When the crank plate is removed for service, make sure to handle it carefully. If it is dropped or handled roughly, the teeth could become bent which will cause drivability concerns. If the plate was removed for any reason and the vehicle then exhibits a drivability concern, closely inspect the teeth on the plate. Remove the timing hole plug and slowly turn the engine over with a ratchet, look for any bent or damaged teeth on the crank plate. In the photo below from QMR TS-162225, you can see the indentation of the dowel on the crank plate after the plate was installed incorrectly. Using SSM4 ECM data, an indicator of a misaligned crank plate could be the Intake AVCS values being heavily corrected in opposing direction from the Exhaust.
06 ONE-TIME USE BOLTS FOR THE BRAKE CALIPER SUPPORT
When performing brake service on newer Subaru vehicles, make sure to always reference STIS for one-time use parts. The vehicles listed below require that the brake caliper support bracket bolts need to be replaced if they are removed.
| '17 - Current Impreza | Front |
| '19 - Current Forester | Rear |
| '20 - Current Legacy | Rear |
| '20 - Current Outback | Rear |
| '19 - Current Hybrid Crosstrek | Rear |
Below is an example of the brake system components, #1 is the brake caliper support bolt, it has a bold star next to it, indicating that it is a one-time use part.
To find the component section in STIS, open STIS for the vehicle being serviced, click on Brakes at the top, then click Brake on the left, click General Description, then Component, anything found with a bold star next to it is a one-time use part.
