Feedback System Mixture Check

  1. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Ensure oxygen sensor is functioning properly. Locate dwell duty check connector at center of firewall. Remove rubber cap and connect positive lead of dwell meter to Blue/Red wire terminal and negative dwell meter lead to Black/Green wire terminal. Place dwell meter on the 6-cylinder scale.
  2. Increase idle speed to 1500-2000 RPM for 30 seconds. Allow engine to idle and monitor dwell meter. If feedback system is functioning properly, dwell meter should fluctuate between 10 and 50 degrees, while not remaining excessively high or low.
  3. If dwell reading remains low, mixture is lean. If dwell reading remains high, mixture is rich. Adjust air/fuel mixture. See the ADJUSTMENTS article in this section.
