Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor

NOTE: Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor may also be known as a pick-up coil or Hall Effect sensor.

Disconnect connector at distributor. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals. See CMP SENSOR RESISTANCE table. See Fig 1 . Replace CMP sensor if resistance is not within specification. If resistance is within specification, go to next step.
If ignition coil and CMP sensor test okay, use feeler gauge to check air gap. See CMP SENSOR AIR GAP table. If gap is not correct, loosen CMP sensor mounting screws and move CMP sensor to adjust air gap. Recheck for spark. If spark is still not available, go to the TESTS W/CODES article to retrieve stored codes.
