Sidekick 1.8L

  1. Disconnect harness connector from ignition coil. Remove ignition coil from valve cover. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminals of ignition coil (primary resistance). See Fig 3 .
  2. Using a 12-volt battery and an ammeter, measure secondary coil current. See Fig 4 . See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE  table. Ensure current does not flow with polarities reversed. Repeat for remaining ignition coils. Replace ignition coils if resistance or current is not as specified.
IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE (1)

Application Primary Resistance Secondary Resistance
Esteem (2) 11,100-14,900
Sidekick 1.6L & X-90 0.7-0.9 13,000-18,000
Sidekick 1.8L .61-.73 (3) *
Swift (2) 20,400-27,600
(1) Ohms @ 68°F (20°C).
(2) Primary resistance specification is not available.
(3) Measure current of secondary coil using a 12-volt battery and an ammeter. Specified current is 0.3-1.4 mA. See Fig 4 .
