Throttle Position (TP) Sensor

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and TP sensor connector. See Fig 1 or Fig 2. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between indicated terminals. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR RESISTANCE  table.

    THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR VOLTAGE (1)

    Application Volts
    Esteem (1.8L) & Grand Vitara (2)
    At Idle .35-.65
    At Wide Open Throttle 3.5-4.5
    (1) Ignition on and engine off.
    (2) Measure voltage at ECM connector terminal No. C20-25 (Esteem 1.8L) or C51-3-12 (Grand Vitara). See PIN VOLTAGE/CIRCUIT RESISTANCE CHARTS article.
  2. On Grand Vitara 2.5L, if resistance is not as specified, adjust TP sensor. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If resistance is not as specified after adjustment, replace TP sensor. For further diagnostic procedures, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
