Timing Control Systems

NOTE: Ensure ignition timing advances as engine speed is increased.
CAUTION: On Esteem, driving vehicle with jumper wire installed in test connector will damage catalytic converter.

Ensure transmission is in Neutral or Park. Set parking brake. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Ensure idle speed is correct. Inspect ignition timing. See IGNITION TIMING in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article.

NOTE: Ignition timing can only be adjusted on Vitara 2.0L and Grand Vitara 2.5L engines.

Ensure ignition timing advances with engine speed (RPM). If ignition timing does not advance, check CKP sensor, CKP signal rotor, TP sensor, test switch terminal circuit, VSS and timing belt cover installation.
