Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers in the system check:
- 1
Record details of the problem (failure, complaint) and how it occurred as described by the customer. For this purpose, use of an inspection form will facilitate collecting information required for proper analysis and diagnosis. - 2
First, check DTC (including pending DTC), see RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any DTC is indicated, print DTC information and freeze frame data, or write them down. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. DTC indicates malfunction that occurred in system but does not indicate whether it exists now or if it occurred in the past and the normal condition has been restored now. To check which case applies, check symptom in question according to Step 5 under SYSTEM CHECK, and recheck DTC according to Step 9 under SYSTEM CHECK. An attempt to diagnose a problem based on DTC in this step only, or failure to clear the DTC in this step, will lead to incorrect diagnosis, lead to improper diagnosis of a normal circuit or difficulty in troubleshooting. - 3 & 4
As a preliminary step, perform visual check of items that support proper function of the engine. - 5
Based on information obtained in Step 1 under SYSTEM CHECK, customer complaint analysis and DTC freeze frame data check, confirm symptoms. Also, reconfirm DTC according to "DTC Confirmation Procedure" as described in each DTC testing procedure. - 6 & 7
Rechecking and recording of DTC/Freeze Frame Data. - 8
Perform basic engine check first. Check parts of the system suspected as a possible cause, based on symptoms appearing on vehicle (symptoms obtained through customer complaint analysis, trouble symptom confirmation and/or basic engine check) and repair or replace faulty parts, if as necessary. - 9
Based on DTC indicated in Step 11 and 13 , under SYSTEM CHECK, and referring to appropriate DTC testing procedure, locate cause of trouble, sensor, switch, wire harness, connector, actuator, ECM or other part and repair or replace faulty parts as necessary. - 10
Check parts where an intermittent trouble is easy to occur, such as wiring harness, harness connector, etc., and related circuits of DTC recorded in Step 3 under SYSTEM CHECK. - 11
Confirm that the problem symptom is gone and engine is free from any abnormal conditions. If what has been repaired is related to DTC, clear DTC once, perform DTC confirmation procedure and confirm that no DTC is indicated.
NOTE:
If only DTC P0461 is indicated in this step, perform visual inspection according to Step 5 and then proceed to DTC P0461 . If only automatic transmission DTCs are indicated in this step, perform trouble diagnosis for A/T. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.
