Esteem (1.6L)
- Check engine idle speed and Idle Air Control (IAC) duty cycle. See IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If idle speed is within specification, go to next step. If idle speed is not as specified, go to step 4
.
- If idle speed is within specification as tested in step 1
, go to next step. If idle speed is not within specification, check for malfunction in following systems:
- Vacuum leaks in intake system.
- EVAP canister purge control valve.
- Clogged IAC valve air passages.
- High accessory engine load.
- Closed throttle position switch malfunction.
- PCV system malfunction.
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, retest system.
- Turn headlights on. If idle speed stays within specifications, system is okay. If idle speed drops below specification, test IAC system. For testing procedure, go to DTC P0505 in appropriate SELF DIAGNOSTICS - ESTEEM article.
- If idle speed is higher than specified as tested in step 1
, go to next step. If idle speed is lower than specified as tested in step 1
, go to step 9
.
- Check A/C input signal to ECM. See A/C SIGNALS CIRCUIT CHECK
under MISCELLANEOUS CONTROLS. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, retest system.
- Repeat step 1
. If IAC system checks okay, go to next step. If IAC does not test okay, repair or replace IAC valve as necessary. After repair, retest system.
- If IAC valve duty cycle is less than 3 percent (ON time) or more than 97 percent (OFF time), as tested in step 1
, check following:
- Intake air leaks.
- PCV system malfunction.
- EVAP system malfunction.
If problem is found in any of these systems, repair as necessary. After repair, retest system. If IAC duty cycle is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check closed Throttle Position (TP) sensor or Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor performance. See appropriate procedure under ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES
. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, retest system. If no problem is found, substitute ECM with known good unit and retest system.
- Check transmission range sensor operation. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR
under ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, retest system. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Repeat step 1
. If IAC system checks okay, go to next step. If IAC does not test okay, repair or replace IAC valve as necessary. After repair, retest system.
- If IAC valve duty cycle is more than 30 percent (ON time) or less than 70 percent (OFF time), as tested in step 1
, check following:
- Improper accessory engine load.
- Clogged idle air passages.
If problem is found in any of these systems, repair as necessary. After repair, retest system. If IAC valve duty cycle is not as specified, substitute ECM with known good unit and retest system.
