SERVICE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): TS 09 10121R, Date of Issue:  October, 12, 2011
SUZUKI: 2012 SX4 (RW420)
SECTION: Transmission

CONDITION

If the battery voltage drops below a certain level during engine cranking within 2 seconds after turning the ignition on, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) will not provide correct control of the CVT fluid line pressure. This condition can result in:

If the vehicle enters the CVT protection mode due to a rise in CVT fluid temperature, maximum vehicle speed will be limited, to protect the CVT from damage, and the driver will experience slow vehicle acceleration from a standing start.

CAUSE

The CVT controller (TCM) has been programmed with unnecessary control logic.

CORRECTION

DO NOT replace the TCM or CVT transmission! Please reprogram (reflash) the TCM with updated software that has been improved to correct the CVT controller programming. The SEPS database files installed on the PC or laptop being used for reprogramming must be version 2.011.0925 or later.

SERVICE ACTION

  1. Check the VIN number on the vehicle (see VIN plate location diagram) to the attached VIN list to confirm that it is part of the recall and eligible for reimbursement. If the VIN does not appear in the attached table, stop, this vehicle is not part of the SQ Emission Campaign and not eligible for reprogramming. If the VIN included in the table, continue to the next step.

    Vehicle identification number (VIN)

Location: on the cowl top panel in engine room or at the left side of the instrument panel

  2. Connect the SDT scan tool to the vehicle and check all controllers for DTCs. Troubleshoot and correct any DTC(s) retrieved, or make a note of those that require further attention to correct these malfunctions after the reprogramming is completed.
NOTE: Refer to the DTC Table  included in this bulletin to identify DTCs that can set under conditions that are common during routine service/repair procedures even though there is no failure. These DTCs do not require additional attention.
  3. Clear the DTCs using the SDT.
  4. Connect the pass-thru device being used to the USB port of your PC or Laptop.
  5. Plug the pass-thru device into the DLC (Data Link Connector) of the vehicle being reprogrammed.
  6. Turn the ignition switch to the ON (Run) position leaving the engine OFF.
  7. Start the SEPS software program on your PC, then follow the prompts to select the desired system controller to reprogram and the pass-thru device being used. Once communication has been established between the vehicle controller and the PC, confirm that the proposed system update information matches that listed in the "ECU Model List"  table included on the previous page of this bulletin. If all the data matches the update requirements continue forward through the software program prompts until the process is complete.
  8. Disconnect the pass-thru device from the vehicle.
  9. Connect the SDT to the vehicle and check for any DTC(s) which may have been set during the reprogramming process. Again check the DTC table below to for codes that a Technician can expect to find under the conditions of this procedure before clearing the DTC(s).
  10. Test the transmission operation by setting the parking brake, starting the engine and with it running at idle speed, make sure there is no shift shock by applying the foot brake and shifting the transmission select lever in the following order: P→R→N→D→N→R→P
  11. Troubleshoot any DTC(s) that were previously noted (and not found in the DTC table below) and not corrected prior to completing the reprogramming procedure.
  12. Road test the vehicle.
  13. Apply the proper campaign label to the upper radiator support in an area where it will be easily seen and identified, and record your Dealer Code in the white portion of the label.
  14. The reprogram procedure is complete.
    G07743887

The following table lists DTCs that are commonly seen during routine testing due to the conditions listed for each code (Remark), and they are not required to be cleared if no other DTCs are stored. If there is doubt concerning any DTC(s) retrieved, record all codes and clear all modules before reprogramming the ECU to be safe and refer to the appropriate service manual to diagnose remaining codes.
