SERVICE INFORMATION
Tech Notes are announcements that help to communicate and track new information about Tesla Service concerns. Such concerns may or may not be VIN specific. These instructions assume knowledge of motor vehicle and high voltage electrical component repairs, and should only be executed by trained professionals. Tesla assumes no liability for injury or property damage due to a failure to properly follow these instructions or for repairs attempted by unqualified individuals.
A newer version of the 'complete body side assembly' (1565363-S0-A or 1565364-S0-A) may be installed on 2015-2020 Model X vehicles by following this procedure.
NOTE:
This procedure is to be performed by a Tesla Approved Collision Center (TACC) facility.

PROCEDURE
NOTE:
Unless otherwise noted, this procedure is the same for the LH and the RH sides of the vehicle.
- This procedure assumes that the following components have already removed. If not, perform these procedures listed in the Service Manual:
- Driver seat (refer to SEAT ASSEMBLY - 1ST ROW - LH - REMOVE AND INSTALL .
- LH front sill panel trim (refer to TRIM - SILL PANEL - FRONT - LH - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
- LH rear sill panel trim (refer to TRIM - SILL PANEL - REAR - LH - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
- LH lower B-panel trim (refer to TRIM - B-PILLAR - LOWER - LH - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
- B-pillar airbag sensor (refer to SENSOR - AIRBAG - B-PILLAR - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
- LH 1st row seatbelt retractor (refer to RETRACTOR - SEATBELT - 1ST ROW - LH - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
- Modify the B-pillar:
- Insert the template (1834305-00-A) (Figure 1), and then temporarily install the seatbelt retractor bolt. Slide the template as far rearward as possible, and then hand-tighten the bolt.
- Mark and scribe the B-pillar along the template cutout profile (Figure 2).NOTE: Use a scribe to enhance the proposed cut location.
- Wear eye protection and cut resistant gloves, as well as any other necessary Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
- Use a 1/8" drill bit to drill the corners of the new slot (Figure 3).
- Use a 3/16" drill bit to remove material between the corners and open the slot more.
- Use a saw to cut away any obstructions and further shape the slot.
- Use a rough file to clean up the cuts and form the intended slot shape.
- Use a fine file to finish and match the template (Figure 4).NOTE: Leave the template on the vehicle during the modification. It does not need to be removed until the modifications are complete.
- Apply corrosion protection on bare metal surfaces.
- Insert the template (1834305-00-A) (Figure 1), and then temporarily install the seatbelt retractor bolt. Slide the template as far rearward as possible, and then hand-tighten the bolt.
- LH side only
- Modify the wiring harness:
- Locate the 2 electrical connectors for the seatbelt retractor in the electrical harness (Figure 5).
- Open the harness, and free the connectors and their wires from the harness to the marked position in Figure 5.
- Wrap the electrical connector's wires separately with anti-abrasion tape.
- Only install the seatbelt retractor assembly to the B-pillar at this time (refer to RETRACTOR - SEATBELT - 1ST ROW - LH - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
- Modify the wiring harness: Secure the 2 seatbelt retractor electrical connectors to take up any unnecessary slack while maintaining a safe distance from moving parts (Figure 6).CAUTION: Make sure the orange (CPA) connector locks are pressed once installed.NOTE: Make sure the black clip that attaches the harness wire to the seatbelt retractor does not rub on the seatbelt. If any rubbing occurs, remove the black clip and then discard it.
- Use a heat gun on the lowest setting to gently soften the HVAC duct within the B-pillar trim, and when pliable, form the duct to provide space for the seatbelt retractor connector. (Figures 7 and 8).
- Reinstall all components that were removed for access.
