Four Wheel Alignment Check: Procedure

  1. At the alignment rack, verify that the turn and slip plates are locked.
  2. On the touchscreen, touch Controls > Suspension > Low  to set the vehicle ride height.
    CAUTION: Do not set Model X 2021+ vehicles to "Standard" ride height while performing the alignment.
  3. With the help on an assistant, align the vehicle to the alignment rack ramps, drive vehicle onto the alignment rack, and then shift into Park.
  4. Latch the seat belt to the driver buckle.
  5. Exit the vehicle, and then place wheel chocks at both sides of the LH rear wheel.
  6. Re-enter the vehicle, turn off the headlights and climate control, touch Controls > Service > Jack Mode  , shift to Neutral, exit the vehicle, and then manually latch the driver door.
  7. Raise the alignment rack to a comfortable working height.
  8. If a suspension component was recently installed and requires torquing while the suspension is loaded, torque the joint now:
    Description Torque Value Recommended Tools
    Bolt and nut that attach front fore link to the subframe 127 N.m (93.7 ft-lbs) 
    • 21 mm ratcheting combination wrench
    • 22 mm fixed head wrench
    Bolt and nut that attach front aft link to subframe 127 N.m (93.7 ft-lbs) 
    • 21 mm combination wrench
    • 21 mm socket
    • 22 mm fixed head wrench
    Nut and bolt that attach the front air spring module to the aft link 140 N.m (103.2 ft-lbs) 
    • 21 mm combination wrench
    • 21 mm socket
  9. Install inflation hoses onto all four wheels so that tire pressures can be set automatically.
  10. Set the tire machine pressures to match those specified for the vehicle.
    NOTE: Refer to the "Tire and Loading Information" label located on the driver side B-pillar.
  11. Install the alignment heads to the center of the each wheel, and then adjust the side arms as necessary to grip the tires securely.
  12. Remove the tire inflation hoses from all 4 wheels, and then install all 4 valve stem caps.
  13. At the alignment machine, click or touch Begin Alignment  and then enter the Service Visit information into the alignment machine.
  14. Verify that the turn plates are centered to the front tires, and reposition the plates as necessary.

  15. Remove the wheel chocks from the LH rear tire, move the vehicle forward by slowly rotating the tire counter-clockwise so that the front wheels center onto the turn plates, and then install the wheel chocks on either side of the tire.
    NOTE: The turn and slip plates should automatically unlock.
  16. Install the brake pedal depressor.
  17. Perform a steering wheel caster sweep, then center and level the steering wheel, and then install the steering wheel lock to keep the steering wheel in position.

  18. Verify the alignment parameters are in specification and print the vehicle alignment summary.
  19. If the parameters are not within specifications, discontinue this procedure and perform the four wheel alignment adjustment. See FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECK AND ADJUST .
  20. Remove the steering wheel lock, the brake pedal depressor, the steering wheel level, and then place the vehicle into Park.
  21. Remove the alignment heads from all four wheels.
  22. Fully lower the alignment rack.
  23. Release the driver door latch.
  24. Remove the wheel chocks from the LH rear wheel.
  25. On the touchscreen, touch Controls > Service > Jack Mode  to turn jack mode off, release the passenger seat belt from the driver buckle, and then remove the vehicle from the alignment rack.
