Test Mode

  1. Before retrieving codes, verify CHECK ENGINE light comes on with ignition on and engine off. CHECK ENGINE light should go off when engine is started. If CHECK ENGINE light does not come on, see appropriate DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK under CODE CHARTS. If light remains on, system has detected a malfunction or abnormality.
  2. Ensure battery voltage is greater than 11 volts and charging system is okay. Engine should be at normal operating temperature.
  3. Apply parking brake and place transmission in Park. Turn air conditioner and all accessories off. Throttle valve must be closed.
  4. To enter test mode, install jumper wire between terminals TE2 and E1 terminals in Toyota Diagnostic Communication Link (TDCL), located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure.
  5. Turn ignition on. Test mode is operational if CHECK ENGINE light flashes with key on and engine off.
  6. Start engine. Drive vehicle at a speed greater than 10 MPH. The ECU will set a Code 42 and 43 if vehicle is not driven. Try to simulate the driveability complaint. Stop vehicle, but DO NOT turn engine off.
  7. Using jumper wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of TDCL. See Figure. Count number of flashes from CHECK ENGINE light. If system is operating properly (no codes exist), CHECK ENGINE light will flash continuously and evenly in 1/4 second increments. See Figure.
  8. If a code exists, digits of code will flash at 1/2-second intervals, with a 1 1/2-second pause between first and second digits. See Figure.
  9. If more than one code is stored, a 2 1/2-second pause will occur before next code is flashed. Once all fault codes are displayed, a4 1/2-second pause will occur, then code(s) display will be repeated.
  10. Codes are displayed from the lowest to highest number. After codes are retrieved, remove jumper wire to exit diagnostic mode. See NOTES ON CODES. For extra help in understanding code diagnostics, see CODE DIAGNOSTIC HINTS  table.
