Spark Test
- Remove duct between air cleaner and intake plenum air connector. Disconnect cruise control cable, accelerator cable and throttle cable (A/T only). Label and remove 6 hoses from idle speed control pipe.
- Remove retaining bolts and idle speed control pipe from intake plenum air connector. Remove oxygen sensor wire from clamps. Disconnect hose from PCV pipe. Remove PCV pipe from cylinder head covers and throttle body.
- Disconnect hose from intake plenum air connector. Remove retaining bolts, loosen clamps and remove intake plenum air connector. Remove oil filler cap. Remove retaining nuts and ignition coil pack cover. Ignition coil pack cover is labeled TOYOTA TURBO on the top.
- Disconnect No. 1 and 2 spark plug wires from ignition coil and clamp. Move ignition coil pack with bracket aside, and remove all spark plug wires from spark plugs. Remove spark plugs.
- Install oil filter cap. Install spark plug wires on the spark plugs. Ground each spark plug securely. Disconnect electrical connector from cold start injector, located on bottom of air intake chamber.
- Disconnect electrical connector from solenoid resistor, located near left front strut tower. See Fig 1. Crank engine and check for consistent spark at the spark plugs.
- If all spark plugs do not fire, using ohmmeter, check resistance of high tension wires. Replace high tension wires if resistance is not within specification. See HIGH TENSION WIRE RESISTANCE table. If resistance is within specification, proceed to step 8).HIGH TENSION WIRE RESISTANCE
Application Maximum Ohms Supra Turbo 25,000 Per Wire - Ensure spark plugs are okay. If spark plugs are okay, check ignition coil. See IGNITION COIL under IGNITION CHECKS (SUPRA TURBO). If ignition coil is okay, check ignitor. See IGNITOR under IGNITION CHECKS (SUPRA TURBO).
- If ignitor is okay, check cam position sensor pick-up coil air gap and pick-up coil resistance. See PICK-UP COIL AIR GAP and PICK-UP COIL RESISTANCE under IGNITION CHECKS (SUPRA TURBO). To install ignition coil, reverse disassembly procedure.
