Diagnosis & Repair
- Test drive vehicle and check operation of speedometer. If speedometer is not functioning correctly, see INSTRUMENT PANEL article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT. If speedometer is functioning correctly, go to next test.
- Access ECM behind glove box. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect ECM connector "E5". See Figure. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between terminal No. 12 (SP1) and ground. If continuity exists, inspect and repair short in circuit. If continuity does NOT exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ECM harness connector "E5", terminal No. 12 (SP1) and ground. If voltage is 9-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage measured is NOT 9-14 volts, inspect for open in circuit. See wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as needed.
- Inspect for possible open circuit between combination meter and ECM. See wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as needed. If circuit is okay, replace ECM and retest.
