Tilt Steering Column: Disassembly

NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
  1. Remove transponder key coil with key cylinder lamp assembly  :
    1. Remove the screw and transponder key coil with key cylinder lamp assembly.
    2. Remove the key cylinder lamp assembly from the transponder key coil.
  2. Remove column upper bracket and column upper clamp. See  DISASSEMBLY  . 
  3. NOTE: Remove the tension springs with the tilt function at maximum tilt up.
  4. Remove 3 tension springs  .
  5. Remove tilt lever  :
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the spring nut.

    2. Remove the tilt lever.
    3. Remove the 2 bushings from the column upper tube.
  6. Remove tilt lever link  .
  7. Remove column upper tube with main shaft assembly  :
    1. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 tilt steering bolts.
    2. Remove the column upper tube with the main shaft assembly from the column tube.
  8. Remove tilt lever retainer  .
  9. Remove main shaft assembly  .
    1. Using SST, compress the compression spring.
      1. SST 09950-40011 (09958-04011)

      NOTE: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft more than 20°.
    2. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring from the shaft.
    3. Remove the shaft assembly from the column upper tube.
    4. Remove the compression spring and bearing thrust collar from the main shaft.
  10. Remove tilt steering pawl  :
    1. Using a pin punch and hammer, tap out the tilt steering No. 2 shaft.

    2. Remove the steering pawl from the column upper tube.
    3. Remove the pin from the steering pawl.
