NORMAL Mode Code Retrieval

NOTE:
  • If there is no DTC in normal mode, check 1st trip DTC using continuous test results function (mode 7 for SAE J1979) on OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester.
  • Hand-Held Tester Only

When diagnosis system is switched from normal mode to check mode, all DTCs and freeze frame data recorded in normal mode will be erased. So before switching modes, always check DTCs and freeze frame data and note them down.
  1. Prepare OBD II scan tool (complying with SAE J1978) or hand-held tester. For operating instructions, see OBD II scan tool's instruction book. Connect OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester to DLC3. See Figure. If scan tool displays UNABLE TO CONNECT TO VEHICLE, check DLC3. See DATA LINK CONNECTOR NO. 3 INSPECTION  under SCAN TOOL PROBLEMS. If scan tool does not display UNABLE TO CONNECT TO VEHICLE, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch ON and push OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester switch ON. Use OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester to check DTCs and freeze frame data and note them down. For more information on freeze frame data, see FREEZE FRAME DATA . If there is no DTC in normal mode, check 1st trip DTC using continuous test results function (mode 7 for SAE J1979) on OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester.
    NOTE:

When simulating symptoms with an OBD II scan tool (excluding hand-held tester) to check DTCs, use normal mode. For code on DTC chart subject to 2 trip detection logic, perform either of following actions:

    • Turn ignition switch OFF after symptom is simulated once. Then repeat simulation process again. When problem has been simulated twice, MIL lights up and DTCs are recorded in ECM.
    • Check 1st trip DTC using mode 7 (continuous test results) for SAE J1979.

  3. Confirm details of DTC. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If driveability problem exists and no DTCs are present, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom.
  4. After repairs have been completed, clear DTCs from ECM. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . Road test vehicle to ensure all symptoms and/or complaints have been repaired.
