Inspection Procedure

HINT:

  1. Connect OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester, and read throttle valve opening percentage. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Connect the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester main switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Read the throttle valve opening percentage.

    OK:

    THROTTLE VALVE SPECIFICATION

    Throttle Valve Throttle valve opening position expressed as percentage
    Fully open Approx. 75%
    Fully closed Approx. 10%
    1. OK: Check for intermittent problems (See  PRE-CHECK  ). 
    2. NG: Go to next step. 
  2. Check voltage between terminal 1 of wire harness side connector and body ground. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Disconnect the throttle position sensor connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between terminal 1 (VC) of the wire harness side connector and body ground.

    OK: 

    Voltage: 4.5 - 5.5 V

    1. NG: Go to Step   5 . 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  3. Check throttle position sensor (See  THROTTLE BODY  ). 
    1. NG: Replace throttle position sensor. 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  4. Check voltage between terminals VTA1 and E2 of ECM connector. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the glove compartment (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between terminals VTA1 and E2 of the ECM connector.

    OK:

    THROTTLE VALVE SPECIFICATION

    Throttle Valve Voltage
    Fully closed 0.3 - 1.0 V
    Fully open 3.5 - 4.5 V
    1. NG: Check for open and short in harness and connector in VTA circuit between ECM and throttle position sensor (See  PROCEDURE  ). 
    2. OK: Check and replace ECM (See  PROCEDURE  ). 
  5. Check voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the glove compartment (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between terminals VC and E2 of the ECM connector.

    OK: 

    Voltage: 4.5 - 5.5 V

    1. NG: Check and replace ECM (See  PROCEDURE  ).  
    2. OK: Check for open in harness and connector in VC circuit between ECM and throttle position sensor (See  PROCEDURE  ).
