Fuel System: Inspection

  1. INSPECT FUEL INJECTOR ASSY
    1. Check the resistance.
      1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.

      Standard:

TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      1-2 11.6 to 12.4 Ω at 20°C(68°F)

If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel injector.

    2. Check the injection volume.
      NOTE:
      • Perform the test in a well-ventilated area and watch out for flames.
      • Handle the fuel tube connector carefully.
      1. Prepare a new fuel tube.

        HINT:

ENGINE TYPE AND PART NO SPECIFICATION

        Engine Type Part No.

      2. Using a cutter knife, cut the protector of the fuel tube protector as illustrated. Tear the protector by hand, then remove the fuel tube connector.
NOTE: If the protector is cut too deeply using the cutter, the O-ring of the fuel tube connector will be damaged.
      3. Install the fuel tube connector into SST, then connect the fuel tube connect to the fuel pipe (the vehicle side).

        SST 09268-1047 95336-08070

CAUTION: Connect the fuel tube connector (quick type) in accordance with the precautions.

      4. Install a new O-ring onto the fuel injector.
      5. Install SST and the vinyl tube onto the fuel injector.

        SST 09268-41047 (09268-41110, 09268-41300, 95336-08070)

      6. Set the fuel injector in a graduated cylinder.

        HINT:

Install a suitable vinyl tube onto the injector to prevent gasoline splashes.

      7. Actuate the fuel pump. (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION )
      8. Install SST onto the fuel injector.

        SST 09842-30080

      9. Connect SST to the battery, then measure the injection volume for 15 seconds. Perform the inspection 2 or 3 times, then calculate the average.

      Standard:

      1ZZ-FE:

INJECTION VOLUME AND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EACH FUEL INJECTOR SPECIFICATION

Injection Volume Difference between each fuel injector
      60 to 73 cm3 (3.6 to 4.5 cu in.) per 15 seconds 13 cm3 (0.8 cum.) or less

      2ZZ-GE:

INJECTION VOLUME AND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EACH FUEL INJECTOR SPECIFICATION

Injection Volume Difference between each fuel injector
      77 to 94 cm3 (4.7 to 5.7 cu in.) per 15 seconds 17 cm3 (1.0 cu in.) or less
NOTE: Always do the switching at the battery side.

If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel injector.

    3. Check the leakage.
      1. When inspecting the injection volume, remove SST from the battery.

Standard: 1 drop or less every 12 minutes

If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel injector.

  2. INSPECT FUEL PUMP
    1. Check resistance.
      1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.

      Standard:

TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      1-2 0.2 to 3.0 Ω at 20°C (68°F)

If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel pump.

    2. Check the operation
      1. Apply battery voltage to both terminals. Check that the pump operates.

      NOTE:
      • These tests must be done quickly (for less than 10 seconds) to prevent the coil burnout.
      • Keep the fuel pump as far away from the battery as possible.
      • Always do the switching at the battery side.

If the motor does not operate, replace the fuel pump.
