Electric Motor Description And Function
- Never touch, cut, or disconnect any orange HV cables or connectors, or any of the HV components without first disabling the system, to prevent injury or death due to electric shock.
- When working on or around the HV system, always assume the HV battery and components are charged/energized until it is proven that they have been discharged and made safe.
- Any person working with the high voltage system MUST be certified to do so.
- Read and follow all instruction labels that are attached to the vehicle. These are provided for your safety.
Technical Description:
The VinFast VF e35 is a fully electric vehicle. The vehicle has 2 liquid-cooled HV motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, by means of which AWD is realized. The motors are operated at a voltage of about 400 V and develop a power of 130 KW VF 8 ECO (150 KW VF 8 PLUS) and a torque of 150 Nm. The electric motor is a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Synchronous motors are AC motors in which, at steady state, the rotation of the shaft is synchronized with the frequency of the supply current (AC). The front and rear EDS are mainly assembled using identical parts, the main difference being that there is no parking lock actuator on the rear axle.
The control system, which is also liquid-cooled, is designed as a 3-in-1 component and includes a DC-DC converter, OBC and PDU.

Overview of EDS components:
Inverter module:
- The inverter module (1) is located at the outer stator housing.
- The electric controller receives direct current from the HV battery via the HV cable and the 3-in-1 (PDU, OBC, DCDC).
- Direct current is transformed into three phase alternating current and supplied to the electric motor via an integrated wiring connection.
- The electric controller is connected to the vehicle's electrical network via the low voltage connector at the front.
- Also, the electric controller is equipped with the coolant inlet for the EDS unit.
- The coolant runs through the controller's cooling channels before being supplied to the electric motor's housing.
EDS Function - Transmission
The differential/reduction gear set provides the fixed forward and reverse ratio. Changing speed and torque is fully automatic.
PARK (P)
This position locks the wheels and prevents the vehicle from rolling either forward or backward. PARK is the best position to use when starting the vehicle's drive system.
REVERSE (R)
This position allows the vehicle to be driven backwards by reversing the rotation of the electric motor.
NEUTRAL (N)
This position allows the vehicle to be moved without powering up the electric motor and without the Park PAWL engaged.
DRIVE (D)
This position allows the vehicle to be operated in a forward direction by electrically varying the output torque and speed of the electric motor.
