NO-START CONDITION: IDLE STABILIZER INSPECTION
TECHNICAL INFORMATION TIP
Reference Number(s): VLK0194AP, Date of Issue:
NO START CONDITION - IDLE STABILIZER INSPECTION
YEAR(S): 1980 & Later
MANUFACTURER: Volkswagen
MODEL(S): Vanagon Waterboxer, Rabbit
ISSUE & TIP
On 1980 and later air cooled Vanagons, early Waterboxers, and Rabbits, don't be fooled into thinking that your no-start is caused by a bad Hall generator in the distributor. In some cases the idle stabilizer unit will go bad and interrupt the signal from the distributor.
To test the idle stabilizer, just disconnect its two harness connectors. Then plug the two harness connectors together, bypassing the idle stabilizer. If you now have spark and the engine now starts, you've found your problem.
