Idle Check

  1. Before checking idle. There must be no exhaust leaks in between cylinder head and catalytic converter. Coolant temperature needs to be greater than 176°F (80°C). Battery voltage needs to be greater than 11.5 volts. All electrical consumers and A/C need to be switched off. Vehicle in park or neutral, with parking brake on.
  2. Connect scan tool to DLC. See DATA LINK CONNECTOR  .
  3. Start engine and idle. Using scan tool check for DTCs in memory. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES. If no DTCs are stored, go to next step. If DTCs are stored, repair as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table, in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. Using scan tool, clear DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  4. Briefly increase engine RPM to 3500 and let idle for two minutes. Using scan tool, follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions to check idle speed. For idle specifications, see IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS  table.
