Starter Does Not Crank Engine

NOTE: On vehicles with automatic transmission, ensure park/neutral switch is operating properly.
  1. Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure electrical and ground connections are clean and tight.
  2. With ignition switch in START position, measure voltage at starter solenoid terminal No. 3. See Fig 1 . Reading should be at least 8 volts. If there is no voltage, or voltage is less than 8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  4 .
  3. While operating starter, measure voltage at terminal 50 of ignition switch. If reading is at least 8 volts, check wiring between ignition switch and starter solenoid. If voltage is not as specified, replace ignition switch.
  4. While operating starter, measure voltage at starter solenoid terminal No. 2. See Fig 1 . If reading is at least 8 volts, repair or replace starter. If reading is less than 8 volts, replace starter solenoid.
