2.8L VR6 (Engine Code AXK)

  1. Ensure ignition is off. Ensure battery voltage is at least 12 volts. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE (2.8L VR6, ENGINE CODE AXK)  . Remove fuel filler cap.
  2. Connect Pressure Gauge (VAG 1318), or equivalent, at fuel supply line/hose in engine compartment. See Fig 1 . Open shut-off valve of fuel pressure gauge; lever points in the direction of flow (A). Reinstall fuel pump fuse No. 18 (if removed).

  3. Remove fuel pump relay from relay panel. Connect Remote Control Switch (VAG 1348) between battery positive source and fuel pump terminal. See Figure .
  4. Activate fuel pump with remoter control switch and slowly close lever (A) until pressure is at 44 psi (3 bar). See Figure . Once this pressure is reached, do NOT move lever any further. Empty measuring container.
  5. Connect DVOM to battery terminals. Activate fuel pump for 30 seconds while collecting fuel in measuring container and measure battery voltage. Record fuel volume and battery voltage.
  6. Compare quantity of fuel with specification. See Fig 2 .
NOTE: Voltage shown in graph in Fig 2 is at fuel pump. Battery volage is about 2 volts more than that measured directly at fuel pump.

  7. NOTE: Fuel filter is mounted near fuel tank.
  8. If minimum fuel pump volume is not as specified, check fuel lines for possible restrictions, kinks or blockages. Connect Pressure Gauge (VAG 1318), or equivalent, at fuel filter. See Figure .
  9. Repeat fuel pump volume check. If minimum volume is now reached, replace fuel filter.
  10. Repeat fuel pump volume check. If minimum volume is still not reached, remove fuel pump and check strainer for clogging. If strainer is okay, replace fuel pump.
NOTE: It is not necessary to drop fuel tank to access fuel pump. Remove driver's seat. Lift carpeting above parking brake lever. Remove fuel pump assembly access plate. See Figure .
  11. If fuel pump volume is okay, but an intermittent fuel supply problem is suspected, check fuel pump amperage draw. See FUEL PUMP AMPERAGE DRAW  .
