Selector Lever Cable, Removing And Installing

-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 2.0L or AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 3.6L .

-- Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector lever -2-, for example, using a wrench.

Use pliers to remove the lock washer -3- from the cable bracket -4-. Do not use a sharp-edged lever. Otherwise the selector lever cable could get damaged. The bolts -5- are not removed.

-- Disengage the gearshift lever cable -1- from the clip -2-.

NOTE:

Always replace the clip on the selector lever cable.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the selector lever cable.

  • Do not push the selector lever cable rearward out of the cable bracket. When removing the selector mechanism, first guide the selector lever cable out of the cable bracket.

-- Raise the vehicle.

-- Remove the center tunnel heat shield under the selector mechanism. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - HEAT SHIELD .

-- Remove the plugs, and remove the clip -arrow-.

Replace the clip after removal.

-- Insert a large screwdriver in the grooves on the locking mechanism and turn 90° in the direction of -arrow-.

-- Pull the cable from the selector mechanism and remove.

Installing 

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Do not lubricate the selector lever cable.

After installing check the selector lever cable for ease of movement.

-- Guide the cable in the selector mechanism until it is visible through the locking mechanism in direction of -arrow-.

-- Turn the locking mechanism 90° in the direction of -arrow- with a large screwdriver.

-- The cable is correctly locked when the grooves on the locking mechanism are at a right angle to the cable.

-- Install the new clip -arrow- and replace the plugs.

-- Insert the selector lever cable -1- in the cable bracket -4- and install a new lock washer -3-.

NOTE:

Do not push the selector lever cable -1- on the selector lever -2- yet. This takes place after the selector lever cable is checked and adjusted.

-- Engage the selector lever cable -1- into the clip -2-.

-- Install the heat shield under the selector mechanism. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - HEAT SHIELD .

-- Check and adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .

-- Check the selector mechanism. Refer to SHIFT MECHANISM, CHECKING .

-- Install the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 2.0L or AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 3.6L .
