Fuel Injection System - Diesel: Description
The diesel fuel injection systems consist of the fuel tank, fuel filter, distributor-type injection pump, glow plug system, throttling pintle injection nozzles, and a centrifugal governor. See Fig 1 . Turbo diesel models have a boost compensator to enrichen fuel mixture during turbocharger operation. See Figure .
A vane type fuel pump, built into the injection pump, supplies fuel from the fuel filter to the injection pump. Injection pump supplies fuel to injection nozzles under high pressure, in the firing sequence 1-5-3-6-2-4. Excess fuel is returned to the fuel tank by return lines.
An altitude compensation system has been added to advance injection timing at high altitudes. The injection pump is also equipped with a cold start device which facilitates cold weather starting and reduces exhaust smoke.
