Generators & Regulators: Description

NOTE: In mid-2004, Volvo introduced a redesigned S40. For early production cars, the 4th character of the VIN is V. For late production cars, the 4th character of the VIN is M. Early production S40 models are equipped with 1.9L, 4-cylinder engines. Late production S40 models are equipped with 5-cylinder engines. S40 and V40 are equipped with an 80, 100, 120 or 140 amp generator. Generator generates AC current which is converted to DC current in the DC bridge. Generator has a built-in charge regulator. Accessory drive belt transfers power from crankshaft pulley to power steering pump, air conditioning (A/C) compressor and generator. Belt tension is tensioned using an automatic belt tensioner. Belt is a Poly-V-belt. Generator with charge regulator can be diagnosed through the central electronic module.
