Steering Column: Installation

  1. Install steering shaft joint on steering gear and tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install lock clip. See Fig 1. Place silicone grease on mount and install lower boot. Install locking ring around boot.

  2. Ensure steering shaft splines are clean. Liberally apply silicone grease on steering shaft splines and steering column mount. Install steering column mount and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install steering shaft on lower joint and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install locking clip.
  3. Guide steering column into mount. Ensure mount locking ring does not come out of position. Center steering column in relation to instrument panel. Install washers and bend back (locking) plate. Install nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Press wiring cable harness into position under steering column.
  4. Install ignition switch connector holder and connector. Install ignition lock connector. Install ignition lock. Turn key to position "I". Press down lock lug with a drift. Press lock into sleeve. Ensure lock lug is correctly positioned in splines. Install panel above pedals. Install switches and slip ring. See Fig 2.

  5. Install steering column covers. Install air bag module and steering wheel. See AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL. Removal (960, S90 & V90)
  6. Remove air bag module and steering wheel, air bag contact reel and ignition switch. See AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL , AIR BAG CONTACT REEL and IGNITION SWITCH .
  7. In the engine compartment, remove pin, screw and nut on upper steering shaft joint. Remove the locking pin in the upper screw on the lower joint. Slacken off the nut. Release lower steering shaft from steering column by sliding steering shaft toward the steering gear.
  8. Remove 4 Steering column mounting screws. Remove steering column from vehicle. See Figure.


  1. Lubricate lower part of the steering column with petroleum jelly. Slide steering column down through the rubber grommet in the cowl panel. Install screws and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Install lower steering shaft with steering column. Install nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install locking pins.
  3. Ensure rubber gaskets are correctly positioned to install sealing rings around the steering column channel.
  4. Turn ignition key to "I" position. Press the catch down a drift or similar. Install ignition switch. Install connector for ignition switch.
    NOTE: Following point applies only to cars with ignition switch interlock.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to position "I" or "II". Press cable into place in ignition switch. Ensure that the cable locking tabs are securely engaged in ignition lock.
    NOTE: Following point applies only to cars with electronic immobilizer.
  6. Install the antenna ring onto the ignition switch. Ensure that the connector engages properly.
  7. To install reverse procedure. See AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL, AIR BAG CONTACT REEL and IGNITION SWITCH .
