Engine Oil Level Sensor

GLL1028989Courtesy of VOLVO CARS CORPORATION

The function of the sensor is to provide the Engine Control Module (ECM) with information regarding the level of engine oil in the oil sump.

The engine oil level sensor is of the passive level sensor type, which measures the oil level both statically (ignition on) and dynamically (when driving).

The sensor is supplied with 12 V from the Engine Control Module (ECM) and generates a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM).

The lower the oil level the longer the pulse width of signal.

HINT: On vehicles with structure week 201420- the sensor is of the longer type compared with previous versions. This is to improve the level signal's reliability in all relevant level areas.

The sensor is diagnosed by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The signal from the sensor can be read out.
