DTC P0441: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Control Insufficient Purge Flow
- Perform PCM reset procedure. See PCM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES . Connect SCS service connector. See Figure. Test drive vehicle for about 10 minutes including a gradual acceleration from 50 MPH. If DTC P0441 sets, go to next step. If DTC P0441 does not set, problem is intermittent, system is okay at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires between EVAP purge control solenoid valve connector, EVAP purge flow switch and PCM connectors. See the WIRING DIAGRAMS
article.
- Check EVAP control system vacuum hoses for breakage, clogging or misrouting. Repair as necessary. If vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step.
- Start engine and hold at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral, until cooling fan comes on. Allow engine to idle. Disconnect EVAP control canister vacuum hose from top of throttle body. Check for vacuum at EVAP control canister vacuum port on top of throttle body. If vacuum is not present, go to next step. If vacuum is present, ensure throttle is adjusted correctly.
- Open throttle valve slightly from idle position. If vacuum is not present, clean EVAP control canister vacuum port on top of throttle body. If vacuum is present, stop engine and ensure throttle cable operates smoothly with no binding or sticking. If throttle body is okay, go to next step. Replace throttle body if there is excessive wear or play in throttle valve shaft or if shaft is binding or sticking.
- Locate EVAP purge flow switch in right rear of engine compartment, next to EVAP purge control solenoid valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to EVAP purge flow switch vacuum hose. Using a jumper wire, backprobe between PCM 32-pin connector terminals No. 10 (Black wire) and No. 15 (Red/Yellow wire). Start engine and run at 1500-3000 RPM. If vacuum is 2 in. Hg or more, go to next step. If vacuum is less than 2 in. Hg, go to step 8).
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect EVAP purge flow switch vacuum hose. Start engine and run at 1500-3000 RPM. Measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector terminal No. 10 (Black wire) and PCM 31-pin connector terminal No. 20 (Brown wire). If more than one volt is present, go to next step. If one volt or less is present, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If DTCs do not reset, replace original PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP purge flow switch 2-pin connector and connect a jumper wire between harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector terminal No. 10 (Black wire) and PCM 31-pin connector terminal No. 20 (Brown wire). If more than one volt is present, replace EVAP purge flow switch. If one volt or less is present, repair open in Brown wire between PCM and EVAP purge flow switch.
- Turn ignition off. Locate EVAP purge control solenoid valve next to cruise control actuator. Disconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open or short in Yellow/Black wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve and PGM-FI main relay.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve harness connector terminals. Measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector terminals No. 10 (Black wire) and No. 15 (Red/Yellow wire). If battery voltage is present, replace EVAP purge control solenoid valve. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between PCM and EVAP purge control solenoid valve.
