Description And Operation: 2.0L
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (1) monitors and manages all engine parameters to optimize performance and fuel consumption by use of real-time responses to different operating conditions.
The 2.0 T4 MultiAir engine management is fairly complex, mainly due to the direct fuel injection and the MultiAir module, which the PCM uses to introduce air into the cylinders according to variable intake valve lift laws.
The engine management system is designed with the following goals:
- Achieve power, torque profile and fuel efficiency performance goal.
- Comply with the emission limits expected for each market.
Below, is a list of the main requirements for electronic engine management:
- Direct fuel injection with fuel demand control via high-pressure pump solenoid valve and high-pressure injection into the combustion chamber.
- Multi-injection capacity (up to 2 injections per cycle)
- Monitor the oxygen level in the exhaust using 1 broadband oxygen sensor upstream of the catalytic converter and 1 On/Off oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter.
- Monitor the quantity of intake oxygen using a broadband oxygen sensor.
- Turbocharger with boost pressure control through an electric actuator that varies the geometry.
- Manage the process of introducing air into the cylinders with the MultiAir system
- A PCM that interfaces with the Next-Gen vehicle architecture.
The PCM manages the various engine systems through dedicated sensors and actuators.
