2.9L - Primary

NOTE:

If this Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is being replaced with a new unit, use a diagnostic scan tool to perform the Flash Programming Procedure (if available). This will confirm that the module is updated to the latest applicable software level.

REMOVAL 

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the hood. Refer to HOOD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM .

  5. Remove the engine wire harness retaining screw (1).

  6. Open the harness retainer clips (1a) to release the wire harness (1b).

  7. Loosen the clamp (1) and disconnect the hose.
  8. Remove the screw (2) and the bracket.

  9. Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) bracket upper nuts (1).

  10. Remove the PCM (1b) lower nut (1a).

  11. Disconnect the PCM (2) wire harness connector (1).
  12. Remove the PCM with bracket.

  13. If necessary, remove the screws (1a) and separate the PCM from the bracket (1b).

INSTALLATION 

  1. If previously removed, place the bracket on the PCM and tighten the screws.
  2. Place the PCM in its housing and connect the wire harness connector.
  3. Tighten the lower and upper nuts securing the PCM bracket to the body.
  4. Place the wire harness bracket in position and tighten the screw.
  5. Connect the hose and tighten the hose clamp.
  6. Secure the wire harness to the routing bracket and tighten the bracket hold down screw.
  7. Fill the engine coolant. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM .
  8. Install the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  9. Install the hood. Refer to HOOD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Using the diagnostic scan tool, program the PCM. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
NOTE:

If this Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is being replaced with a new unit, a diagnostic scan tool MUST be used to determine if alignment of the PROXI configuration data into the new ECU is needed. If PROXI alignment is needed, follow the routine outlined in the diagnostic scan tool for PROXI Configuration Alignment under the Body Control Module (BCM) Miscellaneous Functions menu.
