DTC P1640/18048: Engine Control Module Faulty

NOTE: VAS 5051 scan tool with VAG 5051/1 adapter cable are necessary to diagnose this code. Follow test equipment manufacturer's instructions for scan tool operation.
NOTE: For this DTC, ECM does not illuminate Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) unless malfunction is recognized after 2 consecutive ignition cycles.

DTC P1640/18048 stored in memory suggests Engine Control Module (ECM) malfunction. Before replacing ECM ensure that power and ground connections are okay. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If power and ground connections check okay, replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT . After repair, use scan tool to clear DTCs and generate a ECM readiness code. See FUNCTION 05 - CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and READINESS CODE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Test drive vehicle. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC does not reset testing is complete.
