Address Word 00 - Automatic Test Sequence (Guided Fault Finding)

  1. Connect VAS, VAG or generic scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located behind cover under left side of steering column. See Figure. Turn ignition on or start engine and let it idle. If engine will not start, crank engine for at least 6 seconds. If scan tool begins to display, go to step  3. If scan tool does not begin to display, go to next step.
  2. If no communication is possible with Engine Control Module (ECM), verify scan tool connection to DLC is okay. If scan tool connection is okay, check wiring harness between DLC and ECM for open or short circuit. The ECM is located at rear of engine compartment, next to wiper motor. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . If problem is found, repair as necessary. If wiring harness is okay, check supply voltage and ground to ECM. For diagnostic procedure, go to DTC P0560/16944-P0563/16947 . Go to next step.
  3. On VAS 5051 scan tool press, GUIDED FAULT FINDING button. On scan tool, from RAPID DATA TRANSFER, select 00 - CHECK DTC MEMORY - ENTIRE SYSTEM. Scan tool will initiate an automatic test sequence, testing all OBD capable systems. If scan does not display any DTCs, proceed to 2001-02 TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.). If scan tool displays any DTCs, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
