Output Diagnostic Test Mode (function 03)
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode can only be performed with the ignition switched on and the engine not running.
- The electric fuel pump runs continuously throughout the Output Diagnostic Test Mode.
- During the Output Diagnostic Test Mode, each control element (except the injectors) is activated for about 1 minute unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
- The control elements can be tested either by listening or by touching.
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode is terminated if the engine is started or if an engine speed pulse is detected.
- If the Output Diagnostic Test Mode is to be repeated, the engine must be started and the ignition switched off and then on again.
The Output Diagnostic Test Mode activates the following components in the stated sequence:

Test requirement:
- Fuses for engine electronics OK.

Test sequence
- Connect the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051, connecting and selecting functions , and select the vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" from the menu. When doing this the engine should be idling.
Display on VAS 5051:
- Select diagnosis function "03 - Output Diagnostic Test Mode" from the menu -1-
Activating solenoid valve for activated charcoal filter (EVAP canister purge regulator valve)
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 1st control element in test
1 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve-N80-
- This valve is activated for about 1 minute (clicks) unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):
- Test Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve -N80-. Refer to Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-, testing .
Activating secondary air inlet valve
- Press the Δ button.
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 2nd control element in test
2 - Secondary air injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-
- This valve is activated for about 1 minute (clicks) unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):
- Test Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N112-

Activating relay for secondary air pump
- Press the Δ button.
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 3rd control element in test
3 - Secondary air pump relay -J299-
- The secondary air pump relay -J299 (in 3-point relay carrier in electronics box on left side of plenum chamber, plug-in position 2) switches the secondary air pump motor -V101 on and off at intervals of approx. 1 minute, unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
If Secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run at intervals:
- Test secondary air pump relay -J299-:

Activating charge pressure control valve
- Press the Δ button.
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 4th control element in test
4 - Charge pressure control valve -N75
- This valve is activated for about 1 minute (clicks) unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):

Activating camshaft adjustment valve
- Press the Δ button.

- This valve is activated for about 1 minute (clicks) unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):
- Test camshaft adjustment valve

Activate leak detection pump tank ventilation system
- Press the Δ button.

- Change-over valve in leak detection pump is activated for about 1 minute (clicks) unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button..
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):

Activating air recirculation valve for turbocharger
- Press the Δ button.

7 - Recirculating valve for turbocharger -N249-
- This valve is activated for about 1 minute (clicks) unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):

Activating solenoid valve 2 for EVAP canister
- Press the Δ button.
Display on VAS 5051:

- This valve is activated for about 1 minute (clicks) unless the test program is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the Δ button.
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):
- Check Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve -N115-

Activating injectors
- Press the Δ button.
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 9th control element in test
9 - Injector - Cyl. 1 -N30-
- Press the Δ button.
- The injector should click five times after the Δ button is pressed.
If the injector does not click:
- Test injectors. Refer to Fuel injectors, testing .
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 10th control element in test
10 - Injector - Cyl. 3 -N32-
- Press the Δ button.
- The injector should click five times after the Δ button is pressed.
If the injector does not click:
- Test injectors. Refer to Fuel injectors, testing .
- Press the Δ button.
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 11th control element in test
11 - Injector - Cyl. 4 -N33-
- The injector should click five times after the Δ button is pressed.
If the injector does not click:
- Test injectors. Refer to Fuel injectors, testing .
- Press the Δ button.
Display on VAS 5051:
A - 12th control element in test
12 - Injector - Cyl. 2 -N31-
- The injector should click five times after the Δ button is pressed.
If the injector does not click:
- Test injectors. Refer to Fuel injectors, testing .
- Press Δ button after activating the last injector (cylinder 2).
Display on VAS 5051:
A - Output Diagnostic Test Mode is completed
- Press the ← button to exit from function "03 - Output Diagnostic Test Mode".
