Steering Column, Removing And Installing: Installing
Install in reverse order of removal and note the following:
- Replace the bolt after removal
- Clean the threaded hole for the bolt on the universal joint with for example a thread tap.
-- Check the steering column for damage. Refer to STEERING COLUMN, CHECKING FOR DAMAGE .
-- If necessary, convert the Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module -J764-. Refer to Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module -J764-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Engage the steering column -2- in the instrument panel crossmember assembly aid -1- at the top and bottom (depending on the version).
-- Align the steering column to the instrument panel crossmember and position it.
-- Tighten the upper steering column bolts -arrows-.
-- Tighten the lower steering column bolts -arrows-.
Vehicles with Anti-Theft Protection Component
-- Set the bolt -2- with the anti-theft protection lower section -1- in the installation position and tighten.
-- Drive the anti-theft protection upper section -3- flush into the anti-theft protection lower section using a plastic mallet.
Continuation for All:
There is a risk of accident if the universal joint is installed in the incorrect position.
There is a possible safety risk if there is an absence of traction when steering.
- Note the following the instructions for installation.
-- Mount the flat side on the universal joint -1- onto the flat area of the steering gear -2-.
- The opening on the steering gear must exactly align with the round hole for the bolt -arrows-.
-- Check if the universal joint is seated correctly by pulling. Tighten the bolt.
-- Remove the steering column switch module. Refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- After the installation of the steering column switch module perform the basic setting for the Steering Angle Sensor -G85-. Use the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
