Adaptive Cruise Control, Adjusting, Static Adjustment (Overview Calibration Equipment)
- A dynamic calibration is recommended. Refer to ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC), ADJUSTING, DYNAMIC ADJUSTMENT, CALIBRATION DRIVE .
There are Two Choices for Calibrating/Adjusting:
The "complete alignment"
This procedure should be selected for the following activities if a wheel alignment and calibration/adjustment should be performed.
- Rear axle toe/chamber was adjusted.
The "quick access"
This procedure should be selected for the following activities if only the calibration/adjustment will be performed.
- The installation position of the Control Module for Adaptive Cruise Control -J428- in the vehicle has changed.
TIP:
- Both procedures are programmed in the wheel alignment computer. The respective procedure is performed automatically. It is only necessary to select the appropriate program for the procedure that will be performed.
- If only the wheel sensor should be calibrated/adjusted, then the "quick access" mode must be selected on the wheel alignment computer.
- The procedure in the "quick access" mode is described in the following.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- Wheel Alignment Computer
- Setting Device - Basic Set: VAS6430/1 or Setting Device - Basic Set: VAS6430/1A
- ACC Reflector Mirror : VAS6430/10
Procedure
The procedure is described on a John Bean V3D Aligner: VAS6331 .
The procedure may vary if using other wheel alignment computers. In this case, follow the instructions on the wheel alignment computer screen.
- Note the test requirements. Refer to AXLE ALIGNMENT TEST REQUIREMENTS .
- Follow the measurement preparations for calibrating/adjusting the driver assistance systems. Refer to MEASUREMENT PREPARATIONS .
-- Check sensors and retainers for damage, external influence and secure fit. Service any damaged components.
-- Check the front bumper cover for damage, cracks and secure fit. Service any damaged components.
-- Check the DTC memory for adaptive cruise control (ACC). Fix all displayed entries.
-- Drive the vehicle "straight" onto the alignment rack.
-- Switch the ignition off.
-- Connect the battery charger for the battery support mode. Refer to BATTERY, CHARGING .
-- Move the wheels so that they are straight.
-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, guide the diagnostic cable through the open door window.
-- The vehicle exterior lamps are off.
-- All the vehicle doors are closed.
-- Install quick-action clamps on the wheels.
-- Mount the reflectors on the quick-action clamps.
-- Perform the wheel run-out compensation.
-- If necessary, remove the contamination of the sensor lens with a wet towel.
-- Select the ACC calibration button on the wheel alignment computer.
- The ACC Setting Device must not be moved on the calibration beam.
-- Install the ACC Reflector Mirror: VAS6430/10 -1- centered on the calibration beam.
-- Position the ACC Setting Device: VAS6430 with the ACC Reflector Mirror: VAS6430/10 centrally and parallel at the distance -a- to the sensor lens in the radiator grille.
- Dimension -a- = 120 ± 2.5 cm
-- Place the Camera: VAS6331/1 -1- for the ACC adjustment on the Setting Device - Basic Set: VAS6430 on the right side and tighten.
-- Level the bubble level -A- on the ACC Reflector Mirror: VAS6430/10 -5- using the adjusting screw -1-.
-- Level the bubble level -B- using the adjusting screws -2 and 3-.
-- Use the crank -arrow- to adjust the reflector height -5- so that the laser beam is centered vertically on the sensor lens.
-- Position the reflector mirror on the side of the calibration beam -arrows B-, that the laser beam horizontally strikes the sensor lens in the center.
-- Turn the fine adjustment screw -4- until the display on the wheel alignment computer is within the tolerance range.
-- Using the laser beam on the ACC Reflector Mirror: VAS6430/10 check if the laser beam contacts the center of the sensor lens. If necessary align the reflector mirror again.
-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
-- Switch the ignition on.
-- Select and start the Diagnostic operating mode.
-- Select the Test plan tab.
-- Select the Select individual test button and select the following tree structure consecutively:
- Diagnostic-capable systems
- 0013 - Control Module for Adaptive Cruise Control-J428
- 0013 - Control Module for Adaptive Cruise Control, functions
- 0013 - Calibration
-- Start the selected program and follow the instructions on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester display.
-- Switch off the ignition after successful calibration/adjustment.
-- Disconnect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester from the data link connector.
-- Disconnect the battery charger. Refer to BATTERY, CHARGING .
