6 Cyl. Models

  1. Remove upper shaft as follows: Remove steering wheel, lower cover from steering column, and turn signal cancelling cam. From upper end of shaft, remove collar, retainer ring, washer, compression spring, spring seat, and bearing. Remove cover (top section) from bearing block of accelerator pedal. Disconnect shaft from universal joint. Remove retainer ring and collar from lower end of shaft, then drive out lower support bearing. Remove shaft.
  2. Remove lower shaft as follows: Mark lower end of shaft and universal joint for reassembly reference, and remove clamp bolt from "U" joint. Remove lower cover from steering column. Remove bolts retaining lower shaft to flexible coupling. Push shaft forward and remove from flexible coupling. Pull shaft upward out of lower universal joint and remove. Inspect plastic bushing at top of lower shaft and its sleeve in bearing block. Replace if worn or damaged. To install, reverse removal procedure.
