| GROUP: | 12 - Engine Electrical |
SUBJECT
Programming Data Update for M50 Engines
SITUATION
Vehicles within the production range listed may be affected by one or more of the following conditions:
- Engine will not start primarily during cold weather (32°F or lower) or at high altitudes, in conjunction with the following symptoms:
- - Long cranking time, engine will not start
- - Engine starts but runs rough, black smoke coming from exhaust
- - Spark plugs are "wet"
- Check Engine light is illuminated in conjunction with:
- - Fault code 13 - Oxygen Sensor failure
VEHICLES AFFECTED
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

CORRECTION
When an affected vehicle is next in the workshop perform a data update using MoDiC software version 4.2 or higher.
- Prior to starting the programming update, check for and correct existing DME faults. Once all faults have been corrected and cleared, the update can be performed.
- - If fault code 13 is present, replace the oxygen sensor and claim using regular warranty procedures. A diagnostic printout must accompany all parts sent to the WBPC.
- Follow the procedure indicated if the information displayed on the DME identification screen of the DIS or MoDiC matches the following:
- Bosch Hardware Number 0 261 200 413
- For reliable cold start performance it is also essential that the correct spark plugs are installed.
Refer to TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 12 03 85 (1085) for spark plug application.
- Always ensure that an approved engine oil with a viscosity matching the ambient operating temperature range of the vehicle is used.
Refer to TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 11 08 94 (4139) for recommended oil viscosities and the operating fluids manual for approved engine oils.
PROCEDURE
If the control module indicated above is installed, the EPROM does not need to be removed. It will only need to be updated.
- Prior to starting the programming update, check and correct DME faults if any are found. Once all faults have been corrected and cleared the update can be performed.
The following steps should be followed in order to correctly update the EPROM, using MoDiC V4.2 or higher
- Connect MoDiC.
- Turn ignition switch to ON.
- Select "Programming."
- Enter Date.
- Select "3. DME programming."
- Select "1. Determine data update measures."
- Answer Y to "Start automatic determination of after-sales service measures?"
- Answer Y to "Start automatic data update?"
- Enter odometer reading.
- Once programming is complete, step through new label data, disconnect MoDiC, print out new label and attach to DME module.
- Check fault memory, no faults should be set.
- Verify proper engine operation.
SERVICE ACTION LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 130. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:
- emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
- punch out code number 130 printed on the label (2); and,
- bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown in Fig 1 .
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Parts and labor will be reimbursable under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles.
