NOTE: Perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles the next time they are in the shop for maintenance or repairs.

SUBJECT

Thermostat Software And Oxygen Sensor/Misfire Reprogramming

SITUATION

Customer complains that the "Check Engine" light is illuminated and any or all of the following fault codes may be stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME) as a result of a software error:

CAUSE

DME calibration software.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E38 and E39 vehicles with M62/M62TU engines, which were produced from 4/97 to 8/99.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Check the DME program number, and if necessary, reprogram the DME.

NOTE: With this programming update it is not necessary to replace the Oxygen Sensor(s) whenever any of the previously listed faults are set.

PROCEDURE

Check the DME program number, and if necessary, reprogram the DME with CD21 or higher:

NOTE: If FC 139 or 140 is stored in the DME, check the thermostat wiring and thermostat and repair any malfunctions encountered before reprogramming the DME. Repairs to the wiring and/or thermostat must be claimed under normal warranty procedures.
  1. Using the DIS/MODIC, print out the DME identification page.
  2. Compare the "Programmed Control Unit" number to the numbers listed below:
    1. 1430684, 1430694, 1430700, 1430949, 1430950, 1430951, 1430952, 1430960, 1430964, 1430968, 1430972, 1430982, 1430984, 1438252
    2. 7501299, 7501300, 7501301, 7502294, 7502296, 7502302, 7502331, 7502430, 7502432, 7502439, 7502442, 7502443, 7502448, 7502453, 7502454
  3. If the "programmed control unit #" matches one of the above listed numbers, reprogram the DME with CD21.0 or higher. Adaptation values must be cleared after programming.
  4. If the programmed control unit number does not match any of the listed numbers, then no further action is necessary.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 258 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-120) and:

  1. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
  2. punch out code number 258 printed on the label and,
  3. affix the label to the B pillar as shown in Fig 1 .

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW Emissions Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be through campaign entry.

Only one work package can be claimed.
