TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): SI B12 40 15, Date of Issue:  November 2015
BMW: E92 (3 Series Coupe); E93 (3 Series Convertible); With the N54T engine
GROUP: Engine Electrical Systems

SERVICE INFORMATION

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

SITUATION

Due to a DME software status error, the on-board diagnostics (OBD) for the catalytic convertor and downstream oxygen sensor may not function properly.

This could result that the OBD readiness for "Oxygen sensor" will not set as completed, but it would not have any effect on the actual tailpipe emissions.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves the E92 and E93 with the N54T engine produced from 3/16/2010 to 10/1/2013.

Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in AIR, the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

PROCEDURE

Program the vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P (3.56.4  or higher).

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply  (SI B04 23 10 ).

For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to Centernet/Aftersales Portal/Service/Workshop Technology/Vehicle Programming.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via normal claim entry utilizing the following information:

Defect Code: 00 12 09 04 00
Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description:
00 63 801 1 FRU Programming and coding was performed previously in conjunction with another campaign or repair (vehicle is already at the specified "Target" integration level or higher, no repair is necessary) (Plus work)

Vehicle Programming and Encoding

If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization, please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code listed above.

The diagnosis and repair of vehicles "arriving" with failed control modules or stored faults which will cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin.

Other Repairs

If other eligible and covered work is performed "prior" to programming and coding the vehicle, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
