Intelligent emergency call

In the event of an accident (crash, rollover, etc.) that exceeds the first triggering threshold (belt tensioner/active head restraint activated): The transmission of information is enabled for quick and targeted assistance at the site of the accident.

The SIM card is used to transmit data specifying the exact position of the vehicle to the BMW Call Center. The vehicle identification number, vehicle type and vehicle color together with the data collected by the airbag sensors in the vehicle are also transmitted.

Data showing the number of people inside the vehicle and which airbags were activated is also recorded. The sensors also register the intensity of the crash. This enables detection of and differentiation between a front-end collision, a side collision, a rear-end collision and multiple collisions, and some models also detect a rollover.

This data provides the emergency services with detailed information about the type of collision that has occurred. An algorithm developed by BMW with scientific support uses this data to calculate the risk of injury to the occupants, enabling early preparation of medical treatment for the persons involved in the accident. At the same time, the psychologically trained employees at the 24-hour BMW Call Center will then establish contact with the vehicle occupants by telephone, providing support where desired until the arrival of the emergency services. There is also the option for a conference call. This involves the BMW Call Center setting up direct voice contact between the vehicle occupants and the emergency services coordination center.

There is also an option for manually activating the emergency call. This function can be used, for example, to call for help for other road users as promptly as possible. In some markets in which there is not yet a BMW Call Center, the emergency services or police are contacted directly, with the vehicle passing on information including its position.
