Removing and installing/replacing steering column (X5 M)
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Move steering column into "extended" position
- Disconnect BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
- Remove AIRBAG .
- Remove STEERING WHEEL .
- Remove STEERING COLUMN UPPER TRIM and LOWER SECTION OF STEERING COLUMN SHROUD .
- Remove STEERING COLUMN CONTROL PANEL .
- Remove LWS (Vehicles with active steering only)
- Remove TRIM PANEL FOR PEDAL MECHANISM .
- Remove FOOTWELL AIR DUCT
Unplug electrical connectors (1) and unclip wiring loom from steering column.
Installation note:
Replace damaged wiring harness mounting.
Make sure wiring harness is in correct position.
Release clamping bolt (1) and slide shaft (2) into steering column.
Installation note:
Recut thread in steering spindle.
Replace clamping bolt.
Clamping screw must rest in groove of upper steering spindle.
No retorquing permitted!
Tightening torque 32 31 3AZ .
Loosen screws (3).
Tightening torque 32 31 1AZ .
Secure steering column against falling out.
Release screws (1).
Tightening torque 32 31 1AZ .
Remove steering column to the rear.
Installation note:
When inserting steering column, make sure guide (1) is correctly fitted in dashboard carrier.
After installation:
- Vehicles with active steering: Carry out steering angle sensor adjustment/alignment for active front steering
- Carry out NORMALIZATION of electric steering column adjustment
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to the limit position. The airbag indicator light must not light up in the process.
- Check directional stability of vehicle
