Code 63/64 Or 65: EGR Flow Check (3.8L): Notes
On closed throttle coast down, the ECM will cycle the integral EGR solenoids on and off individually and look for a resulting change in engine RPM and O2 sensor activity.
NOTE:
Test numbers refer to test numbers on diagnostic charts.
- If a code is set, inspect EGR for damage. Disconnect the 4-wire connector at the EGR valve. Install a fused jumper from battery voltage to terminal "D" of the EGR valve. Start engine. Using a jumper wire, ground terminals "A", "B" and "C" one at a time. A noticeable change in engine RPM should be noted as each terminal is grounded. Grounding terminal "A" should result in a small change, while terminal "C" should result in a large change, or even cause engine to stall.
NOTE:
If EGR valve shows signs of excessive heat (melting), check the exhaust system for blockage. See CHART B1:
RESTRICTED EXHAUST SYSTEM CHECK. Repair as necessary. If exhaust system has been damaged, check for an injector which may be constantly injecting fuel. Repair as necessary and check oil for fuel contamination.
