Steering Column: Description

Steering columns are either floor shift or column shift. Column shift and floor shift steering columns are each available in 3 configurations: fixed column, tilt column and tilt/telescopic column. Design and maintenance of column shift and floor shift columns are similar. Column shift models, however, include an additional shift lever, shift tube, tilt or tilt/telescopic mechanism and related components. See Figure-Figure.

Columns have a 2-piece telescoping gear shift tube (column shift), connected by plastic inserts and shear pins. A 2-piece telescoping steering shaft features upper and lower sections, connected by plastic collars and pins. Steering columns use an integral ignition lock switch. This lock secures the steering wheel and shift linkage (column shift).

CAUTION: On models with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR), use extreme caution when servicing steering column. Air bag could deploy at any time. Before any repairs are performed, disconnect and shield battery ground cable. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove SIR (AIR BAG) fuse from fuse block. Disconnect the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and Yellow 2-way SIR harness connector at base of steering column.
