Cruise Control Inoperative

  1. If cruise control system diagnostic check has been performed, go to next step. If cruise control system diagnostic check has not been performed, go to CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control module harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Pink wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  40 .
  3. Connect test light between cruise control module harness connector terminals "F" (Pink wire) and "E" (Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  41 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure cruise control switch is in OFF position. Using test light connected to ground, individually probe cruise control module harness connector terminals "A" (Gray wire), "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates on any circuit, go to step  18 .
  5. Turn ignition and cruise control switches to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" (Gray wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  19 .
  6. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue wire). Press and hold SET/CST switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  21 .
  7. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" (Gray/Black wire). Press and hold RES/ACC switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  22 .
  8. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "B" (Purple wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  23 .
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control functional switches harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control functional switches harness connector Purple wire terminal. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  37 .
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control release switch. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "A" (Pink wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  32 . If test light does not illuminate, go to step  39 .
  11. Press brake pedal while observing test light. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  24 .
  12. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" (White wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  25 .
  13. Press brake pedal while observing test light. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  26 .
  14. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" (Dark Green wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  28 .
  15. Following manufacturer's instructions, connect scan tool. Command CRUISE DISABLE ON. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  29 .
  16. Using a DVOM set to volts DC scale, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" (Light Blue/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  30
  17. Check speedometer for proper operation. If speedometer operates normally, go to step  31 . If speedometer is inoperative or malfunctions, go to appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article.
  18. Check wire(s) which caused test light to illuminate for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wire(s) as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire(s) is okay, go to step  37 .
  19. Check Gray wire between cruise control functional switches harness connector and cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" for open, high resistance or short to ground. Also check Pink wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "A" and rear fuse block for short to ground. Repair Gray and/or Pink wire(s) as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire(s) is okay, go to next step.
  20. Check Pink wire between cruise control functional switches harness connector and IGN 1 fuse (10-amp), located in rear fuse block, for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Pink wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  37 .
  21. Check Dark Blue wire between cruise control functional switches harness connector and cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  37 .
  22. Check Gray/Black wire between cruise control functional switches harness connector and cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair Gray/Black wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  37 .
  23. Check Purple wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for open, high resistance or short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair Purple wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  32 .
  24. Check Purple wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for short to voltage. Repair Purple wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  32 .
  25. Check White wire between brakelight switch harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  33 .
  26. Check White wire between brakelight switch harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  33 .
  27. Check Orange wire between brakelight switch harness connector harness connector terminal "A" and STOP LP fuse (15-amp) in rear fuse block for open, high resistance or short to ground. Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  33 .
  28. Check Dark Green wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 35 for short to ground. Repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  36 .
  29. Check Dark Green wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 35 for open, high resistance or short to voltage. Repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  36 .
  30. Check Light Blue/Black wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 24 for open, high resistance or short to voltage. Repair Light Blue/Black wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  36 .
  31. Check Dark Green/White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 25 for open or high resistance. Repair Dark Green/White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  36 .
  32. Check cruise control release switch for proper adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE (ABS/TCC) SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust as necessary. If adjustment is okay, go to step  34 .
  33. Check brakelight switch for proper adjustment. See BRAKELIGHT SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust as necessary. If adjustment is okay, go to step  35 .
  34. Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control release switch harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step  42 .
  35. Check for poor connections or connector damage at brakelight switch harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step  43 .
  36. Check for poor connections or connector damage at PCM harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step  44 .
  37. Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control functional switches harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step  45 .
  38. Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control module harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step  46 .
  39. Repair Pink wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "A" and IGN 1 fuse (10-amp) in rear fuse block. After repair, check system for normal operation.
  40. Repair Pink wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" and CR CONT fuse (10-amp) located in underhood fuse block as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, check system for normal operation.
  41. Repair Black wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "E" and ground as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation.
  42. Replace cruise control release switch. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE (ABS/TCC) SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
  43. Replace brakelight switch. See BRAKELIGHT SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
  44. Replace and program PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, check system for normal operation.
  45. Replace cruise control functional switches. See CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONAL SWITCHES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
  46. Replace cruise control module. See CRUISE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation. If system is still inoperative, return to step  2 .
